New piece!! Been working on her on and off for a while now. Hope yall like her. I have been the worst about this blog lately but its about it to get real busy soon so stay tuned!

I'm starting a new comic soon! Nine pages full color!!!! It's going to be in a anthology! I'm really excited about it. It's going to be a real challenge and I'm really hungry for one. The very multi-talented Dan Krall even wrote the story for me!

It's going to be really nice to post some concepts and things to share since I haven't been allowed to show anything I've been doing at work for the past...oh say, A YEAR IN FEBRUARY! The game comes out in March so stay turned cause Im gunna get to post all the characters and monsters and concepts I've been doing for the game its gunna be sweeeeeeeeet. It's gunna be on facebook to so everyone can play it if they want and its free!

Work keeps me really busy and since Im drawing like everyday it really sucks up all my serious art juices. All I have for really have time for is doodles and anything else takes me forever to do BUT if it wont annoy anyone who follows I'd love to post more sketches here. Holiday Doodle coming soon! :)

New piece, I started this while I was still in school and every once in a while I would start up on it again but I would never get far but with the new season out... I finally found the drive to finish! I think this took me so long to finish cause I had to tackle so many thing I've never even come close to drawing before frogs, snakes, swamp and crocodiles. I dont love this piece but I like it. It was definitely a good stepping stone, I do not want to draw things in fear that I wouldnt be able to draw them right.

New True Blood season is slowly growing on me.

I recently started working as a game artist for social gaming company called Rivet Games! They just soft launched a new Facebook game called Pet Tales and I helped design the only human in it and still design the park decor items. The game is about you restoring an old abandon pet park and making it beautiful again! It's a super cute game and kind of addicting once you get into it. Please give it a try :)

My first cover of anything ever! Very exciting. Within my first two weeks of my brand new full time big girl job I got a my first real freelance editorial illustration job AND my friend was visiting from out of town sleeping in my room and it was due in 6 days and I was working 8 hour days with an hour commute. It was not an easy week, I had a lot of sleepless nights this week. I had to rush rush rush with this because I had very little time. I would have liked to spend more time on it, but what can you do??

The article for a magazine called Brand X. Its fairly new and LA based. My good friend Niv Bavarsky had done a cover for them back in October so I was in good company. ;) The article was about the concert in Dallas called South by South West. LA bands meet Austin, TX. They wanted some like bright colors, hispers kids rockin' cowboy things (hats, boots, belt buckles) cacti with the Hollywood sign behind them. I thought they looked a little cowboy hipsters in LA that was so I put the Austin capital building and the Hollywood sign clashing in the background. It was fun a assignment for sure! If your in LA you might be able to pick one up!

PS - Yesterday I drew all day at work FOR WORK. It was awesome. I love my job.

California Girls...

I recently joined the club! I also finished this thing. Took way to long in between moving here and job hunting and buying up all new things that I need for living since I flew and could only bring a handful of things. BARF

Yeah so I moved from home in Charleston, SC to Berkeley, CA about 25 days ago. Just now really starting to be done settling in. Moved in with several classmates from school who all illustrate and design. We're gunna be a powerhouse, wish us luck in our new home! I'll post pictures of it soon when there are less cardboard boxes everywhere. Also...sent out the promo postcards for Valentine's Day! Excited to see if anything comes from them for anybody.

This is a christmas card I made and mailed to a few friends this year. Its a quote from 30 Rock, Jack Donaghy was describing his christmas cards and oooooh it made me laugh. Anyway, I did it pretty quick since Im moving soon and didnt have time to kill myself over it, but Im still pretty happy about it. I usually dont do hand lettering and thats all this card is! It's not exactly what I call my voice in hand lettering or anything but it was a fun exercise aaand it felt super good to send a little christmas greeting to some people that I care about.

Here is a little tribute profile picture for facebook to The Grinch for christmas. This is funny because most of my friends would probably agree with that x-ray sign. Haw! Also because Im so narcissistic, blah, blah, here are a couple of doodles I did of me in adorable winter clothes.

These are pictures from the new Tin Tin movie, not that I have a special place in my heart for Tin Tin but why OH WHY do they think the more real a 3-d animated movie looks the better! It doesnt!!! It just looks creepy! The Incredibles is the perfect example where it was done right, even disney seems to be getting it with Tangled. STOP IT. 60/40 rule. MAYBE EVEN 70/30! It should be 60% cartoony and 40% percent real... Ok. Rant over. Thanks for listening internet.

Sorry for no illustrations lately...thats gunna change soon promise! Lots of projects on my plate right now all freelance all not quite the dream jobs BUT making money for moving and surviving it no.1 priority right now. PS - My birthday is in 11 days. Hey Gang!

Sorry for the lackage of updates but I have been working on stuff! It weird for the first time ever I am kind of KIND OF so busy with commissioned work that I am having a hard time finding time to work on my own stuff!! Kind of cool? Im a little proud!

Portrait commission from a photo simply pulled from facebook! I took out the hand with the cell phone and added another palm tree for some balance. Turned out nicely! 14 x 11 oil on canvas.

This is Otis, another commission. He is an 2nd year anniversary present from a super sweet husband to his wife. The client wasn't quite sure how he wanted this done so I took advantage of the opportunity to do some something different. 9 x 12 Oil on board.

This was for my moms bedroom. Right above the bed. I really wanted to try drawing it in charcoal sealing it and kind of staining color with oil paint and sealing again. It 30 x 40 in. Charcoal, matte medium, and oil on board.

This is a logo/branding job I got. Its weird that someone saw my stuff and thought YES!! This lady should design our logo but they did and I am not complaining! These were some initial sketched ideas for the brands logo. "Fast is Fun" phrase has been patient by my client and he is developing a sporty clothing line to go along with it and I am in charge of branding it (and maybe even t-shirt designs in the future)! Craziness. The ones on the right turned out to be waaaay too wild for him, but we are developing the one icon on the left. More to come later.

Ohhhhh this. This is kind of my first illustration job for a client where I sent an invoice and price quote and got a check in the mail and everything! It a comic for a "newspaper style" newsletter for a company. The design firm writes it and kind of does a like MS Paint mock-up of what they want it to look like and I draw it better, haha. Its a simple job but I am proud just the same...!! They liked it so much I am doing two more for them! Woo-hoo REHIRED! Feels good.

AND MOST IMPORTANT...

I GOT NEW GLASSES and they are soooooo fine!!! I love'em. I was sooo tired of my last ones. These are snazzy old man style Ray Bans and they make me super happy!

Here is a flyer to go with the poster I did the the Rolling Bulls event.

Pretty happy with it! For this one they just asked for a derby girl chancing a dude. I was like...."4 x 6 in. vertical chase scene? How do I make that work....." My brain is so dumb I always think of the most lamest most obvious interpretation thing first but I pushed through and got something pretty neat I think. Also....I drew I dude! I like him but he not quick as cartoony as the lady, need to doodle them more. Anyway enjoy!

Derby Bull Ladies

This is for a local event for Charleston's Roller Derby team (The High Rollers) called "Rolling of the Bulls" where the girls race down a set course. The event basically is a fund raiser for Folly Beach. People can come, drink, buy red scarfs and watch the girls race.

This event is based on a crazy tradition in Spain, Portugal, and Mexico called "Running of the Bulls". Look it up, those pictures are ridiculous. Anyone can participate to get chase by raging bulls. Yay~

I just got back from ICON 6 and it was amazing!

Being together with my favorite illustrators and my favorite friends from school in a fabulously overpriced fabulous hotel was really fun. Shout out to my extremely talented classmates who were there :

I also got to meet Kevin Dart at of the workshops he gave, the doodle above is what I did playing with the techniques he showed. I also got to meet Jon Klassen, Mark Todd, Tim Biskup, The Heads of State, Martha Rich and many many many others! It was a blast. Looking forward to ICON 7!

My Nephew

My sister and my nephew just moved down the street from me and its been a really fun summer having them so close. My nephew, Caden - who is about 4 years old, comes into my room today (my room which is ALWAYS in total chaos) looks around and says:

"Aunt Barbwah...do you need all this STUFF? I don't think you need all this stuff!"

(What insight for a 4 year old!)

"No, Caden, your right I don't need all this stuff.

.....do you want some of my stuff?"

"........yes, yes I do."

And he walks out of my room wearing a gold watch from the thrift store, a braided string bracelet, pleather red belt, and a little grey zipper pouch. He is the the funniest. :)

Thank you so much to the Whitney and Rebecca for helping make it a great show. Illustration floor in 3rd floor of fox was really classy and the work looked so great. This show is so Cheese-town USA so I thought what's more cheesy and artificial the the '50s? So I decided to put them in a snazzy staged soda shop parlor with Sue of course sneering in the corner. Its not quite there yet but its coming along... Im excited to start coloring it and to be done with it because like an IDIOT I tried to include most of the cast. Comments and helpful hints welcome.

Since I am TAing for Dan's Lifestyles class I am doing a different thesis this semester.

Over break I thought about what I used to draw when I was l

ittle and it was basically fanart of all my favorite cartoons(SAILOR MOON) and how much fun I had doing that because I loved the show or the characters and all that jazz. So basically for this semester I am doing a grown up version of that, haha. Editorial illustrations for magazines and websites like Entertain Weekly, ect.

I like the twosome better than the threesome. The colors did not turn out like I thought they would...the paper and ink and the plates were all doing things I did not predict and did not like!!!
Vince says he still likes them but...I don't know..what do you think?
I would do new colors but I destroyed one of the plates in my frustration to keep it keep clean and print properly.....

On a better note...I think the twosome really turned out better then I could have dreamed. I really love how they turned out!! <3>

I SPELLED IT WRONG. UGH- It's actually spelled "Snuggie"
Yaay for photoshop... This was another assignment for Illustration II. We could take any product and make an ad for it in the style of any time frame. I chose the "The Snuggie". The snuggie product itself it kind of stupid and ridiculous so I was to try to portrait it in a classier light.
I was inspired by the ads from the 1930-1950s. I am taking printmaking it seemed appropriate to look at them. Really different from the usual stuff, which is always fun. I like the way they turned out.

These are from my painting class. Which doesn't really exist, so I can paint whatever I want. I still need money for school so I am doing some Charleston paintings. I HATE doing them. I hate it, but they actually sell and its better than a job.

Once I have a few of them under my belt to bring home...I'm painting more sexy ladies. If I could do these and live off them I'd be set. <3>
